چکیده

Considerable progress is being made in interdisciplinary efforts to develop a general theory of the neural correlates of consciousness. Developments of Baars’ Global Workspace theory over the past decade are examples of this progress. Integrating experimental data and models from cognitive psychology, AI and neuroscience, we present a neurocognitive model in which consciousness is defined as a global integration and dissemination system — nested in a large-scale, distributed array of specialized bioprocessors — which controls the allocation of the processing resources of the central nervous system. It is posited that this global control is effected via cortical ‘gating’ of a strategic thalamic nucleus. The basic circuitry of this neural system is reasonably well understood, and can be modeled, to a first approximation, employing neural network principles. q 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd. Learning Vector Quantization with Training Count (LVQTC)

Kohonen's learning vector quantization (LVQ) is modified by attributing training counters to each neuron, which record its training statistics. During training, this allows for dynamic self-allocation of the neurons to classes. In the classification stage training counters provide an estimate of the reliability of classification of the single neurons, which can be exploited to obtain a substant...

On-line learning in changing environments with applications in supervised and unsupervised learning

An adaptive on-line algorithm extending the learning of learning idea is proposed and theoretically motivated. Relying only on gradient flow information it can be applied to learning continuous functions or distributions, even when no explicit loss function is given and the Hessian is not available. The framework is applied for unsupervised and supervised learning. Its efficiency is demonstrate...

This article gives an overview of the different functional brain imaging methods, the kinds of questions these methods try to address and some of the questions associated with functional neuroimaging data for which neural modeling must be employed to provide reasonable answers. q 2000 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Regularization with a Pruning Prior

We investigate the use of a regularization prior and its pruning properties. We illustrate the behavior of this prior by conducting analyses both using a Bayesian framework and with the generalization method, on a simple toy problem. Results are thoroughly compared with those obtained with a traditional weight decay. Copyright 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
